Security Workwear Has a Specific Job to Do
Security professionals communicate authority through appearance as much as through presence. The clothing of a security officer is their primary tool for establishing immediate situational authority — in retail, at events, in corporate buildings, and in residential settings. Workwear for security staff needs to be functional, compliant with SIA regulations on identification, and professional enough to reflect well on the client whose premises they’re protecting.
The Key Elements of Professional Security Workwear
Colour: black is the industry standard for most security applications. It communicates authority, is appropriate for evening and low-light work, and works equally well in retail and corporate environments. For some environments — hospital security, education security — a less confrontational colour such as navy may be more appropriate.
Identification: SIA regulations require security operatives to display their licence. This is typically via clip badge, but the garment should have a visible, consistent position for badge display. Embroidered “SECURITY” designation on the back and “SECURITY” on the front left chest is the most common and effective identification method.
Functionality: Security staff stand for long periods, often in temperature-variable environments. Breathable, comfortable fabrics with freedom of movement are important. For door staff and outdoor security, a waterproof outer layer is a practical requirement.
Dual Branding for Contract Security
Security companies providing staff to client sites often need dual branding — the security company’s own identity plus the client’s site branding. We manage dual-brand embroidery regularly. The standard approach: security company logo on the left chest, client branding (e.g., “City Centre Shopping Centre Security”) on the right chest or back.
