Case Study: Dental Practice Builds Patient Confidence With Role-Identified Clinical Workwear

·1 min read

Patient Anxiety Is a Real Clinical Consideration

Dental anxiety is common — surveys suggest around 36% of adults experience some level of dental fear. In a dental practice environment, every factor that increases a patient’s sense of safety, clarity, and trust reduces anxiety and improves both the clinical experience and the patient’s willingness to return for future appointments.

A six-dentist practice in Surrey identified that patients sometimes struggled to distinguish between different clinical roles — whether the person with them was the dentist, a dental nurse, or a dental therapist. This created occasional patient confusion and contributed to anxiety in already nervous patients.

The Workwear Solution

We developed a three-tier colour-coded embroidered workwear system: dentists in dark teal scrubs with embroidered name and “Dentist” title; dental nurses in mid-blue scrubs with embroidered name and “Dental Nurse” title; dental therapists and hygienists in light blue scrubs with embroidered name and role title; reception staff in white polo shirts with the practice logo. All clinical embroidery used colourfast thread rated for 60°C washing.

The Patient Experience Outcome

The practice introduced a question into their post-appointment patient survey: “Did you feel clear about who was treating you during your appointment?” Pre-workwear change: 64% strongly agreed. Six months post-change: 81% strongly agreed. The most frequently cited improvement in written feedback was “knowing who everyone was” — a direct result of the role-identified embroidered workwear.

The clinical director summarised: “It’s such a simple thing. But when an anxious patient comes in and can immediately see ‘Dentist — Sarah’ on the person’s scrubs, it removes a layer of uncertainty. That matters.”
