It's Workwear

Workwear for plumbing and heating engineers

Kit that goes into a customer's home looking right and comes out of a hot cupboard still looking right.

A plumbing or heating call is almost always in someone's house, which makes this a trade where the clothing is doing sales work whether you planned it that way or not. The homeowner forms a view in the first few seconds, and a branded polo with a legible company name is the cheapest credibility you will ever buy.

The practical constraint is heat and dirt. Engineers work in airing cupboards, lofts and under sinks, and the garments pick up flux, jointing compound and grime that general-purpose workwear does not shed. Darker colours, a fabric with some polyester in it and a willingness to replace on a cycle beats buying something expensive and trying to protect it.

Worth deciding early: whether apprentices get the same kit as engineers. Most firms find it better that they do. A new starter in a different shirt reads to the customer as someone who should not be there on their own.

What this trade needs

  • Branded polo shirts

Front-of-house garment. Buy enough that nobody is wearing yesterday's.

  • Work trousers with knee pockets

Half this trade is done kneeling on a kitchen floor.

  • Softshell or quarter-zip fleece

Warmth for an unheated house in January without looking like outdoor gear.

  • Safety footwear

Toe protection, and a sole that will not mark a customer's floor.

  • Overshoe covers or a clean spare pair

A small thing that customers notice and mention in reviews.

Settle this before you order

  • How many shirts per engineer — this trade gets through them faster than most.
  • Whether you want names embroidered as well as the company logo.
  • A gas-safe or trade-body registration number, if you want it on the garment alongside the logo.
  • Whether apprentices are in the same kit from day one.

You do not need all of them. Trade, head count and where the logo goes is enough to get a useful quote back.
