Healthcare Workwear Is Different from Every Other Sector
In healthcare, workwear carries more responsibility than in almost any other environment. It needs to meet hygiene standards. It needs to be identifiable — patients, relatives, and colleagues should immediately understand who they’re dealing with. And it needs to hold up to industrial laundering multiple times per week without degrading in colour, fit, or structural integrity.
At Customised Workwear, we supply healthcare workwear bundles to GP practices, dental clinics, care homes, opticians, physiotherapy practices, and hospital-adjacent businesses across the UK. Here’s what we’ve learned works — and what doesn’t.
Fabric Requirements for Healthcare Environments
Healthcare garments must be washable at 60°C minimum for hygiene compliance. This eliminates many standard workwear fabrics immediately. Poly-cotton blends rated for 60°C washing are the industry standard. Some environments require 90°C washing capability — particularly in care homes and clinical settings.
Avoid 100% cotton for clinical workwear. It shrinks at high wash temperatures. A 65% polyester / 35% cotton blend gives you wash durability, shape retention, and colour stability across hundreds of wash cycles.
Colour Coding for Role Identification
Colour-coded workwear is a safety and communication tool in healthcare. Patients should never have to guess whether the person approaching them is a doctor, nurse, administrator, or support worker. A clear colour-coding system removes that uncertainty instantly.
Common NHS-influenced colour conventions: blue for nursing staff, green for theatre and clinical support, grey or dark navy for administrative teams, burgundy or wine for management. Your organisation may have its own system — whatever it is, your embroidered workwear should make it consistent across every member of your team.
Embroidery on Healthcare Workwear
Embroidered logos, department names, and role titles on healthcare garments serve a dual purpose: they communicate identity and they reinforce trust. A patient feels more confident when the person treating them is clearly identified by a well-embroidered garment. It signals that the organisation takes its presentation — and therefore its standards — seriously.
All our healthcare embroidery uses colourfast polyester threads that maintain their colour at 60°C+ washing temperatures. We test our embroidery on all healthcare-rated fabrics before production. Request a sample on your chosen garment before committing to a full order.
Staff Name Badges vs. Embroidered Names
Many healthcare settings use clip-on name badges. But embroidered names or role titles directly on the garment offer a more professional and permanent solution — one that doesn’t get forgotten on a coat hook or lost in a locker. For smaller teams, embroidered name personalisation adds a professional touch that patients genuinely appreciate.
