That Fuzzy Surface Isn’t Just Cosmetic
Pilling — the small balls of fibre that form on the surface of fabric after repeated washing and wear — is one of the most common complaints about workwear quality. It makes garments look worn and tired regardless of how clean they are. And once pilling starts, it signals that the fabric structure has begun to break down.
Understanding why pilling happens is the first step to preventing it.
Why Pilling Occurs
Pilling is caused by short fibres working free from the fabric surface under friction, tangling with adjacent fibres, and forming small balls. The friction sources in workwear are: contact with other garments in the washing machine drum, contact between the garment and rough surfaces during work, and rubbing between the garment and seatbelts, tool belts, or backpack straps during daily use.
Fabrics with shorter fibre lengths pill faster than those with longer fibres. This is why cheaper poly-cotton garments (which use shorter fibre polyester) pill noticeably faster than premium quality equivalents made with longer-staple fibres.
Prevention Methods
- Wash inside out: Reduces friction on the garment’s visible outer surface during machine washing.
- Use a mesh laundry bag: Reduces drum friction significantly.
- Lower spin speed: High-speed spinning creates more drum contact friction than lower speeds.
- Reduce wash temperature: Heat softens synthetic fibres and accelerates pilling.
- Choose higher quality fabrics: Premium garments with longer-staple fibres resist pilling substantially longer. The price difference between budget and quality workwear fabrics reflects this difference in longevity.
Removing Existing Pilling
A fabric shaver (electric pill remover) removes surface pilling effectively and restores a clean appearance to lightly pilled garments. It’s a £10–15 investment that can extend the presentable life of garments by several months. It doesn’t stop the underlying pilling process — but it manages the cosmetic effect.
When Pilling Means Replacement
Heavy pilling that returns within one or two washes after shaving indicates the fabric surface has degraded beyond cosmetic repair. At this stage, the garment should be replaced. Browse our workwear bundles for premium-quality replacements that resist pilling significantly longer.
