Pet Owners Are Protective and Observant
Veterinary clients are some of the most observant of any professional service user. They’re in a vulnerable position — their pet is unwell or in pain — and they’re scanning every environmental cue for signals of competence and professionalism. The appearance of the clinical team is one of those cues, and it registers powerfully.
A four-vet practice in West Yorkshire had been operating for twelve years with an informal uniform arrangement — vets wore their own clinical clothing, nursing staff had a mix of provided and personal scrubs, receptionists dressed in their own clothing. The practice manager, reviewing their Google reviews, noticed that “professional appearance” and “looked clean and organised” were consistent elements of positive reviews — but inconsistency was also appearing in a handful of less positive ones.
The Workwear Programme We Developed
We developed a practice-wide workwear programme in consultation with the practice manager and head vet. The system: all clinical staff (vets and vet nurses) received branded scrubs in a consistent royal blue with embroidered practice name and their individual role title; reception and admin staff received white polo shirts with the practice logo embroidered in blue; and a unisex fleece in dark navy with embroidered logo was available for all staff on colder days.
The individual role embroidery was a specific request from the head vet: “Clients should know immediately whether they’re talking to a vet, a vet nurse, or a receptionist. It affects the questions they ask and their expectations of the conversation.”
The Practice’s Experience After Rollout
In the six months following the workwear launch, the practice tracked their Google review sentiment. The percentage of reviews mentioning “professional,” “clean,” or “organised” in positive context rose from 31% to 44%. The practice manager noted that new client first appointments — always an anxiety-heavy interaction — seemed to proceed more smoothly. “People are less on edge when the team looks organised. The uniforms communicate that we know what we’re doing before we’ve said a word.”
