Safety Culture Starts With How People See Themselves
A roofing contractor in the North West with 14 operatives had been through an improvement programme following a near-miss incident on site. Part of that programme involved a cultural shift — from treating safety as someone else’s responsibility to each individual taking personal ownership of their safety behaviour.
The HSE advisor running the improvement programme made an unexpected recommendation: invest in branded, professional workwear. “When people feel like professionals, they behave like professionals. When they’re in unmarked gear that doesn’t distinguish them from a member of the public, the professional standards slide.”
The Workwear Solution
We supplied 14 operatives with Class 2 ENISO 20471 certified hi-vis vests and Class 3 hi-vis softshell jackets. All garments were embroidered with the company logo and “OPERATIVES” designation on the back, and each individual’s first name on the front — making every team member personally identifiable on site.
The personal name element was deliberate. When your name is on your garment, you own your behaviour in it more completely than when you’re anonymous in generic PPE.
The Outcome
Twelve months after the uniform upgrade, the contractor completed a full year with zero reportable incidents — the first time in the company’s ten-year history. The HSE advisor couldn’t attribute this exclusively to the workwear change — the full improvement programme was broader than uniforms alone. But he noted that the change in how operatives carried themselves on site was noticeable: “They present as professionals. They act like professionals. The two things are connected.”
