Case Study: Plumbing Company Rebrands Its Team and Wins a Commercial Contract

·2 min read

The Moment the Penny Dropped

A seven-person plumbing business in the East Midlands had been operating for nine years, primarily on domestic work. The director had been trying to break into commercial contracts — facilities management work, office buildings, small industrial units — but every pitch seemed to fall flat. The work was there. The company had the skills. But the decisions were going to competitors.

The breakthrough came after a site visit to one of the competing firms. “I walked past their team on a job on my way in. They were in matching branded jackets. Embroidered company name, contact details, everything sharp. My guys were turning up in whatever they happened to be wearing. I knew immediately what the difference was.”

The Workwear Investment

The director came to Customised Workwear with a clear brief: I need my team to look like we’re the kind of business that wins commercial contracts. He had a new logo in development and wanted to launch the rebrand and the new uniforms simultaneously.

We supplied: navy poly-cotton polos with embroidered company name, logo, and website URL on the back; matching navy softshell jackets with the same branding; and company-branded hi-vis vests for site compliance. Total investment for seven staff: under £800.

What Changed

Three months after the rebrand and uniform launch, the company submitted a tender for a facilities management heating and plumbing contract covering three commercial buildings. They’d submitted for similar contracts twice previously without success. This time, they won it.

The facilities manager who made the selection decision referenced the company’s presentation during a site visit as part of the evaluation criteria. “They came across as a professional operation. The uniform was part of that impression.”

The contract was worth £34,000 per year. The workwear investment was £800. The director does the maths himself: “Best £800 I’ve ever spent on marketing. No question.”

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t an unusual story. Trade businesses with professional, branded embroidered workwear are perceived as more professional, more organised, and more trustworthy — by both commercial clients and domestic customers. The investment is small. The return is not.
