Patients Were Confused — and That Was a Problem
A busy GP practice with 18 clinical and administrative staff had no formal uniform policy. Clinical staff wore a mix of personal clothing, some with lanyards, some without. Receptionists were indistinguishable from healthcare assistants at a glance. Patients were regularly approaching the wrong person with clinical questions, creating delays and occasionally causing distress when the staff member couldn’t answer appropriately.
The practice manager spoke to Customised Workwear about implementing a role-differentiated uniform system within a tight budget.
The Three-Tier Uniform System
Working within a per-head budget of £35, we developed three distinct garment tiers:
- Clinical staff (nurses, HCAs, phlebotomists): Royal blue polo with embroidered practice name and role title
- Reception and admin: White polo with embroidered practice name only
- Practice managers: Navy polo with embroidered practice name and small GP logo
The colour differentiation alone resolved 80% of the identification problem. The embroidered role titles resolved the rest. Patients could now immediately identify who they needed to speak to based on both colour and the text visible on the garment.
Patient Feedback
The practice introduced a simple patient satisfaction question: “Were you able to easily identify the right member of staff for your query?” Before uniforms: 58% agreement. Three months after: 81% agreement. The improvement was attributed directly to the uniform change in the practice’s internal review.
The practice manager added: “It’s also improved staff confidence. The clinical team feel more professional. It’s small, but it matters in an environment where professional credibility is everything.”
