The NHS Standard: Look Professional Before You Clean Anything
A commercial cleaning company based in Birmingham had been bidding for NHS cleaning contracts for two years without success. The Uniform Specification We Developed
We worked with the director to develop a professional, NHS-appropriate uniform specification. Core garments: navy blue polo shirts with embroidered company logo and “Cleaning Services” designation on the left chest; matching navy scrub-style trousers with embroidered company branding on the right thigh; white cotton-rich tunics for staff working in clinical areas (rated for 60°C washing). All garments used colourfast, high-temperature-rated threads throughout.
The complete uniform communicated: organised, professional, hygiene-conscious, and serious. The same message the NHS procurement team needed to see.
The Tender Result
Six months after the uniform upgrade, the company submitted their tender. They were shortlisted to final two and won the contract — a two-year cleaning agreement covering three NHS Trust facilities. The procurement feedback specifically mentioned the team’s professional presentation during the site evaluation as a positive factor in the assessment.
Total workwear investment for the 18-person team: approximately £900. Contract value: £180,000 over two years. The workwear was the smallest line item in their bid process — and arguably the most impactful one.
