Case Study: Care Home Improves Resident Trust Scores After Uniform Overhaul

·2 min read

Care Quality Is Communicated Before Any Care Is Given

A 60-bed care home in Lancashire had been through a difficult CQC inspection period. The report flagged several areas for improvement, including staff presentation and role identification. Residents and family members had raised concerns about not always knowing whether the person attending to them was a qualified care worker, a kitchen team member, or an administrative assistant.

The registered manager reached out to Customised Workwear with an urgent brief: implement a colour-coded, role-identified uniform system across all 45 staff members within four weeks.

The Uniform System We Developed

Working with the management team, we designed a three-tier colour-coded embroidered workwear system:

  • Senior care staff: Royal blue polo shirts with embroidered role title (e.g., “Senior Carer”) and care home logo on left chest
  • Care assistants: Sky blue polo shirts with embroidered role title and logo
  • Kitchen and domestic staff: Burgundy polo shirts with embroidered role title and logo
  • Management and admin: Navy corporate polo with embroidered logo only

All garments used fabrics rated for 60°C washing. All embroidery used colourfast polyester thread rated for high-temperature laundering. Full production and delivery was completed within 18 business days — just within the four-week window.

The Outcome

At the follow-up CQC visit eight months after the uniform change, the inspector specifically noted the improved presentation and role identification. More meaningfully, the family satisfaction survey (conducted quarterly) showed a statistically significant improvement in the statement: “I can easily identify who is caring for my relative.”

The manager reflected: “We changed a lot of things in that period. But the uniforms were visible every single day. Every time a resident or family member saw a clearly identified carer in a clean, professional uniform, it communicated that standards had improved. It was the most visible signal of change we made.”
